  • Commercial

EXTENDED FOR FINANCIAL YEAR 21-22

As part of the Budget 2021–22, the federal government has extended the Instant Asset Write Off Scheme and Backing Business Investment for another year. As part of the government’s interaction of tax depreciation incentives to help businesses recover from the impacts of the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19).

The Australian government introduces the Backing Business Investment (BBI) scheme in order to encourage a stronger economic recovery and assist businesses* to invest.

The Government is introducing a 15-month investment by accelerating depreciation deductions of 50% of the cost of an eligible asset on installation, with existing depreciation rules applying to the balance of the asset’s cost. Eligible assets** include new Cat® gensets or Cat® marine or industrial engines.

Take advantage of the Government’s latest stimulus package, call us today. Your Cat power system must be first used or installed by 30 June 2021 to obtain this benefit.

Here’s how it works:

Purchase any new Cat power system from EPSA under the new BBI and you can claim a depreciation deduction of 50 per cent of the generator’s value in the 2020-21 income year. This should be more advantageous to your business than under existing tax arrangements.

You can also have your generator purchase financed through Cat® Financial.

*Eligible businesses with aggregated turnover below $500 million, purchasing certain new depreciable assets.
**Eligible assets are defined as new assets that can be depreciated under Division 40 of the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (i.e. plant, equipment and specified intangible assets, such as patents) acquired after announcement and first used or installed by 30 June 2022. Does not apply to second-hand Division 40 assets, or buildings and other capital works depreciable under Division 43.

Continuous Power Is Vital During Covid-19

Cat® Standby Generators are Essential.

  • Health & Education

We were warned of a decade of big challenges – and the catastrophic impact of the bushfires lit this up in full fury before the year started. Just a month later and COVID-19 is placing immense pressure on our energy sector with self-isolation and social distancing measures forcing more people online and using power 24/7.

Reliable back-up power for critical industries is vital in Australia, specially to combat our extremes in weather and the extra pressure on the grid. Now in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, ensuring a reliable back-up generator is in place is more urgent than ever for many businesses. In fact, failure of critical infrastructure is in the top 5 risks for doing business in Australia over the next decade according to World Economic Forum’s 2018 Global Risks of Highest Concern for Doing Business 2018.

When it comes to reliability and uninterrupted power supply, its vital to have a back-up genset from a partner renowned for quality and reliable products, service and support. Energy Power Systems Australia (EPSA) has installed Cat® back-up generators for essential services organisations across Australia who require mission-critical power, including aged care facilities, waste and water treatment plants, hospitals, data centres, telcos, defence and financial institutions.

EPSA is at the ready to support all businesses with reliable emergency power systems

Never more valuable was this type of preparedness than when a Melbourne-based aged care facility suffered a major mains outage. At the beginning of 2020, EPSA supplied the aged care facility with a Cat® DE220 and ATI 400 transfer panel but shortly after certification, the site experienced a major mains outage from an unrelated digging straight into one of their incoming phase mains supply cables whilst undertaking building works.

The pre-installed Cat® DE220 immediately came into service and restored power within seconds to the 110 residents all in isolation for Covid-19 protection. The emergency back-up power was in continuous operation for 43 hours with key personnel benefitting from first-hand operational training by EPSA.

EPSA have now provided over 270 essential backup power units in Victoria to the aged care sector and have the immediate capability to help all businesses with standby power to protect your people.

Cat® C7.1 Industrial Unit Powers Compost Machine For Mushrooms

  • Agriculture / Aquaculture

Cat’s Industrial Open Power Unit (IOPU) is a complete power package containing the engine and cooling package pre-assembled for straightforward installation into several OEM applications – one of which is used by Costa Group – Australia’s largest grower, packer and marketer of premium quality fresh fruit and vegetables including mushrooms.

“I was initially contacted by Costa Group’s Mushroom Exchange contract mechanic to help with an urgent replacement engine for their composting machine,” says EPSA Industrial Sales Representative, Steve Riley.

Nutrient-enriched compost is the essential food source for mushrooms and Costa ensure each of their farms around Australia has access to premium quality compost mix. They required an engine capable of producing around 150kW with the same interface drive (flywheel and housing) as their old engine.

“I determined that the Cat C7.1 168kW was a suitable replacement, complemented with a basic control panel. Our Western Australian workshop immediately built up and tested the package, which allows the customer to run their machine at its full capability with the extra power.”

Costa Group harvest in excess of 15.3 million fresh mushrooms per week and supply within 24 hours of harvest. They boast mushroom farms in Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania and Western Australia, employing over 700 people.

Showcasing New Technology In North QLD

Daniel Thompson says “Whilst Cat generator functionality is quite simple the large touch screen controller is a new addition. If we can save just a few minutes during a power disruption then we have achieved our goals”. By using two different sized generators and a load bank we were able to simulate syncing to the grid. With just the press of a few buttons power was restored. Diesel generation is often relied on during service disruptions, response and reliability is critical!”

Supporting Peak Shaving Agreements In Water Treatment

  • Other

To meet their commercial peak shaving agreements (reducing energy use by shedding loads or by using onsite standby generation facilities during peak times) with the local power company, Yarra Valley Water’s Brushy Creek Sewerage Treatment Plant required a generator upgrade.

In late-2017, the Electrical Engineering Department approached EPSA for technical advice, and along with collaborative input from our Sales, Engineering and Project Services Departments we were able to come up with a “best value solution” for the customer, says Paul Rushbrooke, in EPSA’s Electric Power division.

“Project installation was completed in the last working week of 2018, with final commissioning in January, comprising a Cat® 3512 Diesel Generator rated to 1,500KVA housed in a custom-made
enclosure to address the limited footprint available on site.

“The ability of the 3500 series to take the extreme load steps required at high ambient conditions was a major factor in selecting this series engine. This importance of having reliable quality equipment to the customer was highlighted on the day of final completion testing, when the generator was called on to perform ‘peak shaving’ from the power company in 45-plus degree ambient conditions. This generator performed faultlessly at full load for extended periods of time as we claimed it would.”

Yarra Valley Water own and operate a network of sewer pipes and pump stations to collect sewage from customers. The treatment plant at Brushy Creek treats up to 13 million litres of sewage a day. It uses a form of the activated sludge treatment method to remove organic material and nitrogen from the sewage. Activated sludge treatment, introduced over 80 years ago, is one of the most common sewage treatment processes in use worldwide.
