The Client: Bellerive Oval Tasmania
Powering One-day International and Twenty20 cricket matches at Tasmania’s Bellerive Oval in Tasmania. Keeping the lights on – four 45 metre light towers complete with 11 metre lighting head-frames.
The Background
The 2009-10 Cricket season represents a major milestone for the Tasmanian Cricket Association following confirmation in April 2009 that the Tasmanian State Government would provide funding for the installation of television standard lighting at Bellerive Oval.
Tasmania had been under pressure to install lights at the oval for some time with television broadcasters serving notice that future national and international telecasts needed to be day/night fixtures.
The Requirement
Chubb Fire and Safety Tasmania were one of the successful tenderer for the project and according to Chubb’s Contract Supervisor, Troy Sharp, the pressure was on from day one to have the project designed, built and up-and-running for the start of the 09/10 Cricket season.
“Our involvement centred on the installation of the four 45 metre light towers, the 11 metre head-frames and the associated reticulation works that included two new main switchboards and two standby gen-sets.
“The light towers were made in two sections and lifted into place by a 160 tonne crane and made ready for the lighting head-frames to be attached.
“Power for the lighting head-frames which house over 108 light fittings that each require 2 kW of power comes onto site from Aurora Energy’s power grid, but due to Occupational Health and Safety regulations we had to provide enough emergency back-up power to run 7 fittings per tower in order to produce roughly 100 lux of light to enable the public to egress from the ground safely in the event of a mains failure.
“For the standby power requirements the emergency lighting design called for two units, a 150 kVA unit to feed the north tower and a 220 kVA unit to feed the three southern towers plus the oval’s pole mounted emergency lighting system.
The Solution
“Selection of the most suitable gen-sets for the project was based on three major considerations which included price, reliability and availability and all the leading brands were considered.
“In the end Caterpillar’s Olympian GEP 150 and GEH 220 gen-sets best met the criteria, plus they came with the backing of local Cat® dealer William Adams who we’ve had a fair bit to do with over the years and have always found them to be extremely competent in the support of their Caterpillar products.
“Because of the extensive design work involved in the project the eventual lead-time for supplying the gen-sets was very tight, but William Adams worked closely with their associate company Energy Power Systems to ensure the Olympian gen-sets were available when we needed them.
“And when we were ready the guys from William Adams were able to get the gen-sets on site and commission them in just two days enabling us to get the project completed in December, which was well before the specified deadline.
The Results
“Following installation the Olympian gen-sets have lived up to our expectations and performed faultlessly in all
the trials, with their ratings easily handling the load requirements of the lights while giving us some additional capacity for any future requirements,” Troy said.
Commenting on the Bellerive Oval project, Roger Davey from Energy Power Systems Australia (EPSA) said that the seamless service provided to Chubb was a reflection of the excellent working relationship EPSA has with its Cat dealer partners throughout Australia.
“William Adams briefed us on the project in June and Chubb placed the order in September. Being able to supply the generator sets ex-stock gave us sufficient time to customise the order to include jacketed water heaters and sound attenuated enclosures at our facility in Hallam, then load test them prior to delivery to Chubb in November.
