In fact, Winston, which made landfall on 20 February, is Fiji’s worst natural disaster with 44 confirmed fatalities and nearly 15,000 people remaining in evacuation centres.* With a population of less than one million residents and many residing on remote islands, the number of displaced and injured could be significantly higher. The Australian Government quickly stepped in to offer aid including water purification equipment and medicine, and EPSA too was ready to lend a hand. SUPPORTING FIJI “We immediately mobilised with canopied generators for rapid dispatch in partnership with our Fiji Cat® dealer partner,” says EPSA’s Jason Martin. “We supplied two GEH250s, and a single GEH275. We know that many areas have been dependable sources of electricity for some time, which is crippling local manufacturing and refrigeration services. At times like this, it is great to know we are part of the extended Cat network to be able to respond during crises and provide immediate help to our neighbours.” *According to AAP at time of writing in mid-March. EPSA’s Jason Martin oversees the dispatch of gensets to support Fiji.
